A Reconciling Moment

Hi all,

Reading good books and reflecting on the simple of truths of the gospel - what a great way to spend the first week of the New Year.

Just came back from a week of study leave - going dark - as we call it among our staff. It was so good to spend some dedicated reading. I read Rowan Williams on gospel foundations, Abraham Heschel on Sabbath and a great book by Bryan Stevenson called 'Just Mercy' - he's a lawyer who works on capital punishment cases. He's a bright guy, but his reflections on who 'deserves' mercy was incredibly powerful. Here's a guy who could do a lot for himself with his education, but used it to draw near to the suffering and the struggling. (Reminds me of this person.) He talks a lot about proximity - drawing close to those in need.

"Proximity has taught me some basic and humbling truths, including this vital lesson: Each of us is more than the worst thing we’ve ever done."

I also had the privilege of marrying my next door neighbors - in our backyard! It was such a delightful connection between our families. One of those moments when I felt like we got to be real neighbors, in the way Jesus meant it.

On my study week, I also made a big dent in the Common Ground Curriculum. I'm really looking forward to this class. Every church season, we offer a common ground class on our three big visions as a church. This season, starting Wednesday January 25th, we are focused on 'Gathered Around Jesus' - the foundations and practices of the Christian faith. There is a ton of good info about theology, bible and practical expressions of faith and worship. It's a community learning experience, so grab a couple of friends and sign up for the Wednesday class - or some other group life opportunityAsk Carl if you need helping finding a group.

The sermon this week continues our Reconciling Church series. Last week we talked about our work together - will we be an Acts 2 or an Acts 11 church?

This week, we will be looking at one critical individual decision that each of us need to make in a reconciling church. Come prepared to make a decision as we look at Acts 10 - a Reconciling Moment

Men! Don't be an idiot and forget to sign up for the Men's Retreat. It's going to be ah-mazing!

And we have the MLK Commemoration Service this Monday, January 16. Hope you can join us. Dr. Cesar Cruz is speaking, and he is incredible. Find out more about him here.
